Amazon Echo (4th Generation) Speaker Review: Surprisingly Broad Soundstage

Conclusion Considering the size of the Amazon 4th generation Echo, the audio performance of this speaker is quite commendable. It has a good low-frequency response and a surprisingly broad soundstage, even wider than some stereo devices we’ve heard. The tonal balance is quite harmonious, the volume steps are consistent, the impact is strong and powerful, and almost all spatial attributes are well above average. However, its low-mid frequencies are too prominent, the high frequencies may sound too aggressive, noise can be detected at soft volumes, and the decibel level at maximum volume could be higher. Therefore, while this speaker performs well for relaxation or movie watching at home, it doesn’t truly excel in any of our use cases, at least not in terms of pure audio performance.

Pros .

Overall, the tonal balance is good, and the bass presentation is impressive. Considering its size, the soundstage is quite remarkable. The distance presentation is quite realistic at most volumes, creating a sense of proximity. The balance between the left and right channels is almost perfect. The strong mid-range performance creates a powerful impact.

Cons .

There is a noticeable lack of extension at both the high and low ends. The high frequencies are overly aggressive. Too much low-mid range leads to a muddy sound. A slightly dull tonal balance weakens the attack, especially with high-pitched instruments. The sound source localization is vague. An increase in noise can be felt at soft volumes.
